It’s Time to Take Action – Sample Letter to Urge Gun Reform Now
Last week the parade celebrating the Chiefs Superbowl victory ended in tragedy after yet another mass shooting. Once again, this one hit way too close to home (don’t they all though). Dan is from Kansas City. We are Chiefs fans. We had so many friends who attended the parade. If we still lived in Kansas we would’ve been there too, no doubt. I also couldn’t help but think about how if I was still teaching there students would be walking into my classroom the day after experiencing such trauma. This is not ok. We are not ok.
I have been busy contacting my local representatives. This is something I do often, but especially after these tragedies bring the urgent need for change to the front of my mind! Many times when I bring up contacting my reps people tell me they wish they could do the same and they always intend to but they don’t because they don’t know what to say. I figured today I would share a template with you so that if you want to contact your reps you can.
They need to hear from us. I know it can feel pointless. (I live in Missouri 😑) But if I don’t use my voice to speak up I am only accepting there is no hope for change. I refuse to do that. Join me in hope and solidarity and in fiery rage. Contact your reps today!
If you need to find your rep’s contact info, you can search it here at this link. Or you can search government websites as well. If you are looking for action, follow Moms Demand Action and Everytown.
Thank you in advance for your bravery and courage to speak out! We can create a better world. Our kids are relying on us.
Sample Letter asking for gun reform
Dear [Representative/Senator Name],
As a concerned parent, I am writing to urge you to take immediate action on common-sense gun safety legislation. The recent epidemic of mass shootings across our nation has shown that thoughts and prayers alone will not keep our children safe. As your constituent, I am begging you to stand up to the gun lobby and pass laws that will prevent these tragedies from continuing to ravage our communities.
No child should have to grow up practicing active shooter drills at school. No parent should have to worry that their child won’t come home at the end of the day because they were gunned down in their classroom. Families should be able to gather and celebrate in community without fear. But the current reality in America does not promise safety anywhere. We must take bold legislative action now to curb this gun violence crisis.
I am asking you to support three critical policies:
First, we need universal background checks on all firearm sales. This common-sense measure will help keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them. Background checks are already required for purchases at licensed dealers – this simply closes the private sale loophole.
Second, ban high-capacity magazines and assault weapons. No civilian needs these weapons of war, which are designed to kill the maximum number of people in the shortest amount of time. Restricting them will save countless lives.
Finally, make gun trafficking a federal crime. This will crack down on the illegal flow of firearms that enables criminals and domestic abusers to easily obtain guns.
The time for thoughts, prayers, and moments of silence has long passed. The time for action is now. Our children’s lives are on the line. I beg you to listen to the pleas of your constituents and pass these live-saving gun safety reforms immediately. Please, act now before it’s too late.
Sincerely,
[Your name]
